On Sunday my wife had a craving for seaweed snacks on our way to our appointment. She was particularly craving for Tao Kae Noi Seaweed snacks and we got into one convenient store to grab one. She bought a non-spicy ones just for me.

At the gathering, we opened it up and started munching. I do not really know how to appreciate this seaweed as it is rather tasteless to me. After hearing of my complain, my wife advice me to instead of putting it into my mouth and quickly shallow it, put it into my mouth and suck it to get the real taste out. She was right, after I take my time to suck the taste out, I started to appreciate the favor of the seaweed with the mild salty taste.

Half way through, my wife found a sealed ang bao (Ang bao = red packet) lucky draw. Usually we would expect "Thank you, Better luck next time" and thus never consider much and wanted to throw it away. However, I refuse to throw away without having a look. It never hurt to check it out anyway. Who knows? Maybe it is our lucky day today right? So I carefully open it up on the top of the plastic seal.

To our surprise, we discovered a new $2 note in that packet together with the lucky draw coupon. Yes, it is real SGD $2!! Only then we read the label on the packet about the ang bao with instant cash win. If we have threw it away we totally threw that cash away. If I have tear the ang bao in the middle, I would have tear that poor $2 notes as well into half too. Thank God for being careful.

We bought the snacks at $2.70 and we got $2 cash back!! That mean we only pay $0.70 for it!! Such a good deal right?

Best part was it offer $10, $50 and $100 cash if you are that lucky. Really make you want to buy more to win cash. So people in Singapore can try it out. Make sure you see the sticker of the "Instant Cash Win" before the purchase. Good Luck.

I bought a couple of them to relive some childhood moments. Here are my reviews.

Kaka Snack

Kaka are made up of small crunchy, yellowish balls with free toys inside each packet. The packaging was exactly how it was during the 1980s. Red was the theme and 2 chickens in the front.

I still remember the drawing of the boy watching TV (just look at the design of the TV, you know it is old. My family TV at that time looked exactly like that) at the back of the packaging. The ingredient listing can be found here but I could not find any printed expiry date. Anyway the ingredient listed were Corn, Palm Oil, salt and artificial chicken flavour. Made in Malaysia. :)

The marketing of this product on TV was hot during my childhood. I was tempted by the advertisement and keep on buying to collect the toys which can be found inside. I felt sick after eating it EVERYDAY and I learn a hard lesson that snacks cannot be eaten regularly as meal. That was the time I made a promise to my mun to have proper food for meal instead of tidbits. I used to pay S$0.20 for it as it was my daily allowance as a child. It is still selling S$0.20 today!! However, no free toy can be found in the packet anymore. :(

Satay Sticks

The ingredient listed at the packaging were Jellyfish, salt, sugar and chilies produced in Thailand. At that time, we can buy individually at MaMa shop for the price of $0.10 each stick. Now it sell in packets. Your hands will be likely to have a sticky sensation due to the sauces on the Satay stick. It was not as tasty as before now...

San Zai Biscuit 山楂饼

This is a classic tidbit from China. The price was S$0.05 - $0.10 for one drum back then. It was a affordable tidbits for me. I remember watching movies and having this. Although it was sweet, it does not make you crave for water afterward. It is still affordable today at S$0.10 a drum.

Color ice-cream biscuit

This is another affordable tidbits. Why was it called "Color ice-cream biscuit" since there is no ice-cream on it? Well, back then the ice-cream sellers on the streets are selling biscuits together with the ice-cream or individually as well if you requested. It is sweet, colorful and crunchy but can be rather dry. Almost every child will like it.

Okay that is all the “SWEET” childhood memories that I want to share it today.

PS: I did not finish all the above Tidbits by myself. I shared with my colleagues at work. I am watching my weight and having a balance meal you know. ;)

<msn:type>blogentry</msn:type><live:type>blogentry</live:type><live:typelabel>Blog entry</live:typelabel>

<dcterms:modified>2008-05-05T09:39:12Z</dcterms:modified>

My first taste of Sake

To thank my GF for giving me the gift (Read my previous post), I decided to treat her to a japanese resturant at a japanese neighbourhood. It was in Liang court 4th level recommended by one of our friend. The resturant was cosy and we were told the beef and the pork were imported directly from japan. Japanese beef was rather well known and we order it and to top it up, we order a hot sake.

I have never tasted Sake before. My first experience was it smell nice and when I took a small slip of it, the taste was not harsh as I thought it would be. In fact it is rather smoothing and with the warmth of the hot sake, it make it taste even better. I am not a regular drinker so I took my time. After sometime I felt the kick kicks in but I did not feel the fast noticable heat rate like the time I drink beer. With the company of the juicy medium done beef, it was amazing.

Both me and my GF had a good time enjoying the cosy environment. When the bill came, I was expecting it to be a BOMB but my surprise, it was affordable compare to the quality and quanitiy of the food in some Sushi chain. All in the less than S$50. Will definitely revisit again. Don't worry, I wont be a alcoholic. I am weight conscious too!

<msn:type>blogentry</msn:type><live:type>blogentry</live:type><live:typelabel>Blog entry</live:typelabel>

<dcterms:modified>2007-03-31T01:01:06Z</dcterms:modified>

The Famous Five ice cream

Our configuration of Famous Five were Macademia nuts, Triple chocolate, Mint chocolate, Yam and Caramel Almond Fudge with chocolate toping and whip cream.

Yummy! Relooking at the picture make me fatter already. hehehe

For the benefit of those who do not know what Lor Mee is, please look at the picture below.

Although it was a long queue and self-service, the food is worth the wait. The boss, who is the chief, actually came out to take individual order one at a time and cook for that customer immediately. To me that was a personal touch and it makes me as a customer happy.

In the photo below, the boss on the right wearing white was coming out to take my order.
